Southern Gold Coast- Pure Gold

Attended a meeting last night of tourism business operators (resorts, clubs, attractions) hosted by the business group Connecting Southern Gold Coast. It was a very interesting meeting with some very exciting prospects for the Southern Gold Coast area.

I was thinking about what the Southern Gold Coast has on offer and came up with this list

  • the worlds best beaches- Duranbah, Kirra, Coolangatta, Currumbin, Rainbow Bay (my favourite), Greenmount
  • has produced several surfing world champions, Mick Fanning, Mark Occhilupo, Steph Gilmore

  • is an hour from Brisbane
  • is 40 minutes from Byron Bay
  • is 30 minutes from Surfers Paradise
  • is 5 minutes from Gold Coast airport
  • has some of the best lookouts to watch humpback whales Point Danger, Greenmount (or if you are lucky like I was last year you just stand on the beach and see them amongst the surfers)
  • has the Mt Cougal section of Springbrook world-hertiage listed national park
  • is 10 minutes to Burleigh Heads national park
  • is 40 minutes to Mt Warning/Wollumbin national park
  • is 30 minutes to Springbrook national park
  • is an hour from Lamington national park
  • has Cook Island- one of the best dive locations
  • has the Tweed River and Currumbin Creek
  • has Currumbin Ecovillage- the world’s finest example of sustainable residential living
  • has more than 1500 rooms with everything from caravan parks to 5 star resorts
  • has The Cooly Hotel- 2009 Australian Hotel of the Year
  • has 8 surf lifesaving clubs, is there a better location for a beer?
  • has Twin Towns Services club (with 3 clubs) and Currumbin RSL
  • has 4 major shopping centers
  • has Currumbin Sanctuary- home to one of the largest collection of Australian native wildlife in the world and the famous lorikeets
  • has the Gold Coast’s only skydive operator and you land on the beach
  • is 10 minutes to Tropical Fruit World- has the world’s largest variety of tropical fruit
  • is 10 minutes to the new Tweed Coast
  • has two campuses of Southern Cross University
  • has two golf clubs- one of which has two 18 hole courses
  • has world class cafes and restaurants with every taste catered for- seafood, Italian, Chinese, Thai, Malay, Indian, Japanese, Mexican, steakhouse
  • plenty of kids parks and sporting fields
  • a 3.5km beach-side walkway- perfect for the early morning walk
  • the only place in Australia you can hire a CanAm Spyder and the only Spyder thrill rides and tours in the world
